Mental Performance Consulting
Mental Performance Consulting
Preparation + Opportunity + Execution = Performance
In the fall of 2009, I was preparing for a race on the south island of New Zealand called Challenge Wanaka. At the time, I felt as though my training and preparation over the years had not quite yielded the level of performance that I thought I was capable of. It was at this time that I first started to formally engage in preparing myself for the mental side of competition and I ended up garnering the first professional podium finish of my career in Wanaka.
From that point on, I developed a deep sense of curiosity around what makes the greatest performers do what they do. I have not only explored this idea within my own athletic career, but amongst my professional peers, athletes in other sports, business and industry leaders, actors and performing artists, and by taking a deep dive into history. Moreover, it led to my going back to school in 2023 to get a Masters in sport and performance psychology.
While I certainly do not know all the answers, I do know that we all have our own unique ways of tapping into what makes us perform at our best.
The primary purpose of my consulting style is to help you find what that means for you.
An Important Point
I believe that everyone is worthy of pursuing their best. While “best” may look different for each individual, it’s the process of discovering and striving for our best that brings a deep sense of joy, satisfaction, and fulfillment, often in ways that go far beyond results or outcomes.
Who benefits from this work?
Performance psychology consulting has typically been associated with the realm of athletics, but it really has a much broader scope. A mentor of mine once defined performance as:
“Anything that entails some sort of measured outcome.”
When performance is understood this way, the scope of who can benefit from performance psychology expands well beyond sport alone.
This work may be particularly valuable for:
Athletes of ALL levels who are seeking to perform at the upper range of their abilities.
Coaches, both in maximizing their own effectiveness and in developing psychologically informed coaching practices that elevate athlete performance.
Teams and organizations working to enhance communication, cohesion, alignment, and shared performance standards.
Performers outside of sport whose demands involve sustained execution, decision-making under pressure, or high-stakes outcomes (e.g., leaders, professionals, creatives).
How the Process Works
The process begins with a free introductory meeting to explore whether or not we are a good fit for one another. From there, sessions focus on developing psychological skills and strategies that support your pursuit of high performance. While there are times when consulting takes on a reactionary element, we ultimately want to work in a proactive fashion to develop and refine strategies that can be continually applied over time. This would apply to both:
One-on-One Consulting: working directly with individual athletes and performers
Team Consulting: working directly with teams and organizations
Typical Timeline
There is no set timeline for the consulting process. The length and structure of the work are shaped by your goals, context, and needs.
My aim is to support you in whatever capacity is most appropriate, whether that involves short-term support around a specific performance demand or longer-term development over time.
