Coaching Philosophy
I have now been coaching, in one capacity or another, for over 25 years. My first athlete was me. I started triathlon from scratch in the summer of 2000 with essentially zero knowledge about training, conditioning, racing, etc. I didn’t even know that I didn’t know anything.
Fortunately a lot of time has passed since then and my passion for learning about the aforementioned topic has never waned. There probably have been very few days in the last 20+ years where I haven’t been trying to seek out more knowledge whether through my own training, reading, listening, chatting, etc.
I do not always think that athletic experience is a good proxy for successful coaching, but I do believe my own journey in sport has given me a broad range of varied experiences. Granted, my athletic pursuits were generally in the scope of Ironman distance racing, but along those lines I know what it’s like to want to just finish an Ironman (first Ironman in 2001 was 12:55 and 1034th place), improve your time in an Ironman, win your age group in an Ironman, try to get top 10 in an Ironman, try to get on the podium in an Ironman, and finally, to try and win an Ironman (IM victory in 2014). The primary advantage to this experience as a coach is the empathy it establishes throughout the various levels of athletic progression.
A lack of secret sauce
I don’t have The Secret Sauce. And if there is anything I can guarantee you is it that there is no shortcut to success in endurance athletics. It takes time and work. I will never try to sugar coat that.
What I will try to do is to help your athletic journey be more enjoyable, challenging and, most importantly, rewarding.
The athletes that have had the most success working with me have also stuck around the longest. When someone enjoys the process, the years of work start to string together and eventually the results are indicative of that.
Who is this coaching for?
My coaching is best suited for athletes who are focused on long-term progression rather than short-term gains. There are many excellent coaches who prioritize rapid improvement over condensed timelines, but my work is a better fit for those who are interested in development measured in years, not weeks or months.
With that longer view, the goal is for training and racing to contribute positively to an athlete’s overall life rather than come at the expense of it. I recognize that athletes bring many facets of themselves into the process, and that training does not happen in a vacuum. By taking a holistic approach to athletic development, athletes are more likely to stay engaged in the process, find greater enjoyment in their training, and perform more consistently over time.
Coaching tiers and pricing
Based on the coaching philosophy outlined above, I have structured my coaching accordingly.
I know that many coaching services are often tiered into different packages, but long ago I decided not to offer multiple tiers of coaching that have different service levels, communication limits, or other predefined guidelines. Athletes’ needs shift over time, and my approach reflects that reality. Attention, communication, and direction are adjusted as needed, rather than constrained by any preset structure.
For that reason, I only offer a single coaching option: I either coach someone, or I do not.
Coaching is offered at $600 per month, billed quarterly and paid upfront.
